Natural Incense

Incense-making has ancient roots across Asia, with East Asian incense culture developing over 3,000 years, expanding alongside Buddhism and blending native aromatic woods with traditional herbal pharmacopoeia for spiritual, medicinal, and scholarly refinement.

Modern East Asian incense art carries that long history in its practices and methods. Drawing inspiration from the ancient art of incense making, TOTEM pays homage to East Asian cultures and the practice of incense burning refined over centuries.

You may only notice a subtle scent on your unlit incense. Don't worry — it hasn't spoiled in transit.

Mass-produced incense is often dipped in fragrance oil and synthetic chemicals, which can give it a strong, overwhelming scent straight out of the packet. That isn't necessarily a good thing — it favours an overtly strong synthetic scent over the quality of the actual ingredients.

Ours is crafted using pure ground wood and resin — agarwood, sandalwood, and Nanmu — using traditional methods. These rare woods hold their aroma within their own fibre. It takes heat to release it, which is why you may notice only a subtle scent when it's cold or unlit.

Another distinction is that we don't use a bamboo stick core for our incense sticks, as it's used only when the incense itself lacks integral form, and it dilutes the scent of the wood.

Light it, and the true character unfolds — layered, evolving, and unmistakably authentic.

No shortcuts. That means no added oils, no bamboo cores, no synthetic chemicals. Just the pure wood experience, as it's meant to be.
